One of these past Christmases I was really distraught. The holiday has
become a world-wide trans-religious holiday . We act like eveyone in
the world celebrates it. Schools have Christmas concerts and Christmas
dances and Christmas breaks. And people have to fight for one Hanukkah
song. And Christmas is supposed to be soley for Christians, it is a
religious holiday. Someone like me, who is not religious at all, is not
supposed to be celebrating Chirstmas. And I feel guilty receiving
gifts and performing the traditional Christmas rituals. My parents are
Christians and yet on Christmas morning (a couple years ago) they were
fighting about the fact that my father always fills mom's stocking with
candy and only candy. She was pissed he doesn't put more effort into
it. Christmas wasn't real, it didn't seem like Christmas. The presents
and preparation has taken place of the religious meaning. And who is a
big symbol of Christmas and the winter season? The Snowman, man. Yes,
itwould have made more sense to say Santa Claus is The New Jesus, but
it's just a lot easier to craft a snowman out of clay.
