Ani DiFranco
MR. Ani DiFranco is my all time favorite musician. Anyone who, at the age of only eighteen,
goes off into the world, starts her own record company, and produces great music under
her own terms deserves to be admired. She speaks her thoughts and doesn't let anyone get
in her way.
I told a friend just the other day after he said that by not signing with a big record
company Ani won't
ever make the really big bucks: "That's what she wants. She isn't interested
in making
lots of money. She just wants to do what she loves: making music, making art."
All of us should
be so lucky to get away with doing what makes us happy. It's not right
being stuck in a job that you hate just because
it's the only thing that puts bread on the table. Pursue your dreams.
And it sure as hell isn't right to be in an AVERAGE job just to make the
big bucks.
Ani's big on not ever selling-out, doing things you don't want to do just for
money. And that's why she hasn't ever signed with a big
record company when offers are pouring in: she wants to do everything on
her own terms. She wants to be able to say whatever the hell she feels like.
And that's fucking great.

I recently read a review of Ani's newest CD that criticized her for softening up. She's not
the hard-rocking angry feminist she used to be. This criticism
struck me as almost unjust. So are they saying that artists don't have the right to change,
that they should always output the same material? Art is very much a product of life experiences.
Ani is going through a different time in her life, new things are happening to her (like
being married). If anyone ever got on my case for doing something new with my art, for changing,
for letting the way I feel at any given time affect my art, if I was chastised for breaking
barriers, I'd be more than just a little angry. How are we to grow and learn if we can't change a little
every once in awhile?

So I went to the CONCERT that Ani gave here in Tucson on November 11. One of my
best friends accompanied me and we were up pretty close. During the first
intermission (between the opening act and ANI) we spotted my other good friend who
I knew was going to be there and who had bought tickets weeks and weeks ahead of us.
What a coicidence: she had seats just like five rows directly in front of us.
We all spent the entire time dancing in the aisle and we nearly lost our voices.
